In order to extend the longevity of you system, there are some Do's and Don'ts you should practice:
DO's:
Pump your system on a regular basis. If you have a septic system without a garbage grinder, you should pump every three years. If you have a garbage grinder, you need to pump every year. If you have a cesspool, you should pump the system once a year.
DON'Ts:
Avoid flushing bleach & grease down your drain. Bleach will kill the microorganisms in your system. Grease will cool, and clog up your lines preventing water from flowing. Excessive amounts will travel to your leaching field and cause a mess!
DO's:
Plant grass on your septic system. This allows you system to breath and function property.
DON'Ts:
Try and reduce your laundry usage. The soaps will break down the microorganisms in your system and will result in a dead system.
If you have a garbage disposal, DO NOT dump these items into the grinder:
-Grease, Oil or Fat
-Starchy or Stringy Vegetables
-Pasta
-Egg Shells
-Rice
-Coffee Grounds
- Fruit Pits or Seeds
- Bones
